Fieldwork in Senegal (Férlo)

Between 12 and 26 January 2025, Valerio Bini and Alessio Iocchi from the Milan unit went on fieldwork in Senegal. Between Dakar and Saint-Louis, the longest period of work took place in the Férlo region, specifically in the area around the Reserve des Six Forages – the area most affected by the reforestation projects under the Great Green Wall (GGW), started in 2007 and refunded in 2021. Working on reforestation, green grabbing and development projects in the Sahel, Bini and Iocchi are carrying out a multi-scalar analysis of the GGW implementation process: at local (Férlo), national (Senegal) and Sahelian macro-region level. In addition to the GGW’s implementation process, the work is concerned with the local development projects associated with it, the impact it has had on the territories concerned and their inhabitants, as well as its role in Sahelian and pan-African geo-politics.
