International Conference “Lives in Displacement – Sudanese Experiences in Egypt since April 2023”

On 12 and 13 November, CEDEJ-Khartoum organized the international conference “Lives in Displacement – Sudanese Experiences in Egypt since April 2023” at the French Institute in Cairo (Mounira).
The event brought together researchers, practitioners, artists, and members of Sudanese communities to reflect on the profound transformations triggered by the conflict that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 and its consequences on displacement trajectories toward Egypt.

The conference was structured around three thematic panels, each focusing on a specific dimension of exile and resettlement experiences:

  • Migration Routes: From Internal to International Displacement

  • Settling in Cairo: Emergence and Reconfiguration of Sudanese Neighborhoods

  • Reshaping Social Classes, Gender Roles, and Family Relations in Exile

As part of the program, Marie Bassi and Mariasole Pepa, both members of the AtlaSahel research network, presented their ongoing research, contributing to the discussion on the social, political, and geographical transformations taking place.
