Mutual aid in Darfur: Emergency Response Rooms and survivor- and community-led response to survive civil war
On December 3, Pietro Boschi, a History student at the Università di Padova, defended his
bachelor’s thesis entitled Mutuo aiuto in Darfur: "Emergency Response Rooms" e "survivor- and
community-led response" per sopravvivere alla guerra civile (Mutual Aid in Darfur: “Emergency
Response Rooms” and “Survivor- and Community-Led Response” to Survive the Civil War) with
Andrea Pase and Mariasole Pepa.
The thesis represents the culmination of an internship, carried out with the same professors in
2024, during which the student analyzed the differences in communication between international
institutional humanitarian actors and local mutual aid groups and NGOs in the context of the Sudan
civil war.
The thesis begins with a brief overview of the history of Sudan up to the 2019 revolution. It is
followed by a reconstruction of the events ranging from the fall of al-Bashir to the recent takeover
of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces.
Finally, after providing a theoretical framework on the concepts and practices of localization and
SCLR, the third chapter examines the activities of Sudanese mutual aid groups, particularly the
Emergency Response Rooms. As the epicenter of the humanitarian crisis triggered by the civil war,
special attention is devoted to the work of ERRs and other local humanitarian actors in Darfur.
